THE NORTH JOURNAL

Stories from the island.
For the everyday wanderer.

Three notes from Iceland.
Landscape, food and a slower pace.

Reykjavík's colourful buildings and coastline

Among colourful rooftops.
An afternoon in Reykjavík.

Reykjavík is a city best remembered by the time you spend in it.

From the church, colourful roofs stretch towards the sea. Down in the streets, a café, a corner or an interesting shop window can be enough to change the afternoon's plans.

Here, walking is a lovely way to get to know the city. Connect Hallgrímskirkja, the neighbourhood streets and the coast. Then leave a stretch of the walk without a destination.

Find a table by the window.
Give the afternoon a little time.

An unhurried afternoon

  1. Begin near Hallgrímskirkja and take in the streets and architecture.
  2. Find a café you like and linger over a coffee.
  3. Walk towards the water and spend a little time with the sky.

The northern table.
Rooted in land and sea.

A meal can introduce you to a place as clearly as a landscape.

Iceland's food traditions draw on the sea, its pastures and local ingredients. Seafood, lamb and rye bread bring the island to the table. A simple, warming meal is often all you need.

Three flavours to start with

  • Skyr:A thick, creamy dairy favourite, lovely with berries.
  • Rúgbrauð:Rye bread with a comforting, earthy flavour.
  • Seafood & lamb:A taste of the island's land and sea.

Follow your curiosity at the table. Ask the restaurant about allergies, dietary needs and what is available that day.

Vestrahorn reflected along a still shoreline

Enjoy the view.
Take care of it, too.

A slower trip lets you notice more.

Leave a few stops off the list. Watch the wind move the spray, the light cross the peaks and the clouds cast shadows on the sea. A little patience brings the details into focus.

Iceland's landscapes deserve care.Stay on marked paths, protect fragile vegetation, take your litter with you and respect local communities. Leave a place as you would like to find it.

Take home your memories.
Leave the view for the next traveller.
  • Plan fewer stops and leave room for the weather.
  • Follow local rules and choose a safe place for your photograph.
  • Carry a reusable bottle and dispose of litter properly.
